LANXESS makes sugar white and tasty

ION specialists explained journalists what really matters
Specialty chemicals company LANXESS helps sweets to live up to their name: Industrial-scale production of crystallized sugar and liquid sugar syrup would be nearly impossible without Lewatit® products of LANXESS.

Lewatit® ion exchange resins help to turn brown cane sugar into the popular white crystal or liquid sugar. “The raw material is nearly black and has approx. 1500 ICU – a measurement for the color of sugar”, explained Hans-Karl Soest, Manager Technical Marketing Food sector in the LANXESS Ion Exchange Resins business unit, to journalist while visiting the Lewatit® plant in Bitterfeld.

Refined sugar – the highest quality standard - requires a value between 10 and 25 ICU. Gerold Schade, plant manager in Bitterfeld, explained to journalists how this can be achieved. The cane sugar needs to be washed and clarified first. Lewatit® ion exchange resins then remove the yellowish brown substance, that gives raw sugar its natural color, and make it crystal clear.

Liquid sugar is used mainly by major manufacturers of sweets and beverages. In addition white and sweet grains produced by crystallisation are suitable for private use. Throughout the world more than 1000 food industry customers rely on Lewatit® premium products.
